Description
The ViPrimePLUS Mycobacterium avium complex qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of the Mycobacterium avium complex genomes in clinical samples (e.g. blood, cerebrospinal fluid, skin biopsy).
Mycobacterium avium complex is a group of 28 serovars of the species M. avium and M. intracellulare. These species are non-motile, rod-shaped Gram-positive bacterium. Inhalation or ingestion of the bacterium permits entry to the respiratory or gastrointestinal tract, respectively. The bacteria are engulfed by phagocytes but owing to their tolerance to varying pH levels, are able to multiply within this environment and eventually kill the phagocyte. This results in the bursting of the cell, which subsequently free the bacterium to enter the blood stream. This happens especially in individuals with a suppressed immune system. Symptoms caused by infection with Mycobacterium avium complex in immune-compromised individuals include fever, fatigue and weight loss with abdominal pain or pulmonary symptoms such as chest pain depending on the site of infection. As these species are resistant to many commonly used antibiotics, this reduces the number of drugs that can be used against these infections with treatment usually comprising a multidrug therapy over 12 months.
ViPrimePLUS Mycobacterium avium complex qPCR Kit is intended for research use only.
